Blade Runner (1982)

I’ve seen this one a few times; it stars Harrison Ford as Rick Deckard who is a futuristic detective trying to find runaway robots called “Replicants” that are very close to passing as humans. He is called a Blade Runner hence the title of the film. This film was a landmark for the special effects world with the use of Newtek’s Lightwave 3D Video Toaster animation software. It was nominated for multiple awards, and even won a few. Considering its age, I think it still holds up as a good science fiction film. It has a number of action scenes and clues left to be discovered by the end of the story. Ridley Scott directed this, and the screenplay was written by Hampton Fancher and David Webb Peoples. The initial story was based upon the book written by Philip K. Dick titled: “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?”

Rutger Hauer plays Roy Batty in this, Sean Young is Rachael, Edward James Olmos is Gaff, M. Emmet Walsh is Bryant, William Sanderson is J.F. Sebastian, Brion James is Leon Kowalski, Joe Turkel is Dr. Eldon Tyrell, Joanna Cassidy is Zhora, James Hong is Hannibal Chew, Morgan Paull is Holden, Kevin Thompson is Bear, John Edward Allen is Kaiser, Hy Pyke is Taffey Lewis. Daryl Hannah also appears in this as Pris, this was her first major film role appearance.

The casting was excellent for this film. Harrision Ford quite easily carries the entire film as Deckard. He tracks down these Replicant robots to terminate them. Their purpose is to serve the futuristic colonies outside Earth but they have limited life spans. The majority of the film takes place in Los Angeles in 2019; it was a bold prediction for our future. I think you will enjoy seeing this one especially if you like science fiction films.
