Hellboy II: The Golden Army (2008) Review

Hellboy II: The Golden Army (2008)

I’ve finally gotten around to reviewing this movie, I went to see it with my wife, and we both enjoyed it. I thought it was quite clever for a science fiction film. This was actually better than the original movie, and for some reason director Guillermo del Toro seemed like he had complete creative control compared to the first film. I believe it really helped the overall look and feel of the film in comparison to the original release Hellboy (1994). It is a pretty creative and thought provoking action film with some story to it.

If you know nothing about Hellboy it was originally based off different comic book series created by writer-artist Mike Mignola. The character appears throughout various mini-series, and one-shots which is the term used in the comic book world as a stand-alone story that is created to last as one special issue. More often than not they are one hit wonders, but this character has taken on a life of his own. The character Hellboy is played by a very talented actor named Ron Perlman, who I’m sure you would recognize without all the theatrical makeup covering his face in this adventure. He is rumored to be in the future Tolkien based films The Hobbit part one and two. I remember him from movies like Alien: Resurrection (1997). It is good to see he has a lot of upcoming productions on the way.

The unique Selma Blair stars once again alongside him as the character Liz, and Brian Steele best known for playing creatures in features returns in this playing Cronie, Wink, The Spice Shop Troll, The Cathedral Head, and Fragglewump. Doug Jones is in this as Abe Sapien (Chamberlain) the Angel of Death. He is also rumored to be in The Hobbit films as well. Prince Nuada is played by Luke Goss and he does a brilliant job in the role alongside Anna Walton playing his sister Princess Nuala. The unique character Johann Krauss is performed by multiple actors including John Alexander, James Dodd, and Seth MacFarlane doing his voice. Jeffrey Tambor returns in this once again as Tom Manning the special government operative. I still remember him from the Three’s Company television series playing different characters. He has been around a while, and I’m sure you will recognize him from his body of work.

I just realized there is an Alien (1979) movie connection with John Hurt who starred as Kane (The man with the alien creature popping out of his chest) who also stars in Hellboy II: The Golden Army as Professor Broom and Ron Perlman who later appeared in Alien: Resurrection (1997). The film is unique in many ways, and the different characters are fun to watch. I know a lot of work was done in shooting this film and it paid off at the box office and with the fans. I will recommend Hellboy II: The Golden Army it is a fantastic science fiction adventure to see.
