This is the first film starring a number of upcoming actors based upon the book by Lois Duncan. The screenplay was written by Kevin Williamson, and it was directed by Jim Gillespie. It is basically a revenge horror thriller film, with some amusing background scenery thrown in adding to the atmosphere. I don’t think it was over the top scary, but it certainly had some suspense in it that keeps you along for the ride.
The tagline used was “He’s got a hook on them”
It is basically a hit and run scenario that four teenagers in North Carolina get involved in after having a car accident. All of them are scarred and begin to panic together. But there is a twist in the storyline of course. Jennifer Love Hewitt plays Julie James and the story seems to center around her. Sarah Michelle Gellar is the former beauty pageant winner. Ryan Phillippe plays the self indulgent spoiled rich Barry William Cox who is paranoid as well. (He was once married to Reese Witherspoon in real life) Freddie Prinze Jr. is Ray Bronson who tries to set things right and tries to keep a sound mind. Bridgette Wilson appears in this as Elsa Shivers the sister of Helen. Keep your eyes open for Anne Heche playing an unusual role as Melissa ‘Missy’ Egan.
More of the cast includes: Johnny Galecki as Max Neurick, Muse Watson as Benjamin Willis, Stuart Greer as Officer David Caporizo, J. Don Ferguson as Emcee, Deborah Hobart as Mrs. James, Mary McMillan as Mrs. Cox, Rasool J’Han as Deb, Dan Albright as the Sheriff, and Lynda Clark as Pageant Official.
The entire cast of this film went on to do other projects and it seemed to further their careers to some degree. For several of the cast it became more than just another acting job. Sarah Michelle Gellar and Freddie Prinze Jr. met on this film, got married, and have since welcomed their first child together named Charlotte Grace Prinze. Sarah went on to legally change her name to Sarah Michelle Prinze. You might recognize her from television as Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The couple has since worked together in a few other projects.
There was a sequel to this film made titled I Still Know What You Did Last Summer (1998) it also stars Freddie Prinze Jr. returning as Ray Bronson with Brandy Norwood (The Singer/actress) as Karla Wilson and Mekhi Phifer as Tyrell. I think you will enjoy this to some degree, it was worthy of a watch for a late night thriller.
