Saved! (2004)

This film is kind of off the wall as well as a satire about religion and the bible. It is about church goers who try to force religion down your throat. It makes fun of both sides the believers and non-believers. I think no matter which side you personally believe in you will find it to be funny and ridiculous at the same time. It was pretty entertaining and the cast were great in their roles. It was directed by Brian Dannelly who also co-wrote the film with Michael Urban.

They used the tagline “Heaven Help Us”

It would be considered a comedy with some dramatic moments in it as well. Jena Malone plays Mary as an obvious biblical reference, and the story centers around her for the most part at a Christian high school. Mandy Moore plays Hilary Faye who also attends the school and becomes her rival. Keep your eyes open as Macaulay Culkin is in this with a nice performance as Roland who is Hilary’s brother. He happens to be handicapped and fancies Eva Amurri the only Jewish girl at the school who plays Cassandra, she initially has nothing to do with him. Patrick Fugit plays “Patrick” and becomes the center of affection between the girls. Heather Matarazzo is Tia who is trying to fit in yet is opinionated as well. Chad Faust plays Dean who seemingly is the romantic interest of Mary. Elizabeth Thai plays Veronica and is an acquaintance of the girls.

Martin Donovan is Pastor Skip, who leads the studies at the school centre. Mary-Louise Parker also appears in this as Lillian. Kett Turton is Mitch, Julia Arkos is the PE Coach, Donna White is Trudy Mason, James Caldwell is the Hairdresser, and Nicki Clyne appears as the Guitar Player. The late Patrick Swayze appears in this as well as an over the top religious inspirational speaker.

Things change for Mary as she sees a vision of Jesus in a pool, from there the story gets pretty wild and whacky. I believe most people will find this to be at least mildly amusing and worth a look see.

Passengers (2008)

After having seen this, I was reminded of another movie with a similar end story. I will leave out which one because it would ruin the ending. We both enjoyed this one, and thought it was pretty interesting. If you like surprise endings, then this surely will shock you. It is one of those type films you need to pay attention to all the details along the way to understand everything. Some people may not get it while others will think it is quite clever. Director Rodrigo García did an excellent job with the actors and interpreting the story…as well as giving it an edge. It was written by Ronnie Christensen.

The tagline used was “The Truth Can’t Hide Forever”

The main story is about a horrible plane crash and follows the lives of five survivors. They are under the guidance of a young therapist named Claire, played by the lovely and talented Anne Hathaway. She really did well with this role and you can’t help but be intrigued by her performance. The survivors try to remember what happened from the plane crash and Claire works with them in group therapy sessions. One of the survivors in particular she gets closer to played by Patrick Wilson as Eric. I thought his performance was spectacular and really added something to the movie. You might remember him from movies such as Watchmen (2009) starring with Malin Akerman.

There are more fine performances in this by Andre Braugher playing Perry, Dianne Wiest as Toni, Clea DuVall as Shannon, David Morse as Arkin, William B. Davis as Jack, Ryan Robbins as Dean, Don Thompson as Norman. More of the cast included Andrew Wheeler as the Blonde Man, Chelah Horsdal as Janice, Karen Austin as the Hospital Receptionist, Elzanne Fourie as the Young Emma, Stacy Grant as Emma, and Conner Dwelly as the Young Claire.

I don’t think this movie had enough momentum behind it to be pushed into the mainstream. It is ashamed because it was a good film to see.  But it will hopefully have more life in DVD rentals. I definitely recommend this one, it was a good dramatic film with some mysterious suspense thrown in and romance driving part of the story as well.

A Walk to Remember (2002)

This is a dramatic film with some romance in it. I’m sure your wife or girlfriend will appreciate seeing this one. The story revolves around two teenagers in Beaufort, North Carolina. Shane West plays Landon Carter who is daring and a bit of a troublemaker while maintaining his popularity. Mandy Moore plays Jamie Sullivan who is timid, studious, and somewhat shy keeping to herself mostly while carrying a secret. Some of the students pick on her as a daily routine. This movie is based on a novel which was written by Nicholas Sparks. The screenplay was written by Karen Janszen. Adam Shankman directed this, who has done other films like Bedtime Stories (2008).

The character Landon gets in trouble, and has to serve community time such as working in the spring high school play. Only then does he meet up with Jamie who guides him with his acting. Landon is reluctant to give in to the project, and along the way he grows closer to Jamie who is a plain girl and the daughter of a minister. He discovers she has an incredible passion for life he never realized. He seemingly falls in love with her, but doesn’t realize it until later.

There are more appearances in this by: Daryl Hannah playing Cynthia Carter, Peter Coyote as Reverend Sullivan, Lauren German is Belinda, Clayne Crawford is Dean, Al Thompson is Eric, Paz de la Huerta plays Tracie, Jonathan Parks Jordan is Walker, Matt Lutz is Clay Gephardt, David Andrews is Mr. Kelly, David Lee Smith plays Dr. Carter, Xavier Hernandez is Luis, Marisa Miller is Ms. Garber and Paula Jones is Sally.

The tagline for this film was “Love is like the wind. You cannot see it but you can always feel it”. This movie will surely touch some part of your heart after seeing it. The acting was well done, and the film was put together nicely. I will definitely recommend A Walk to Remember (2002).
