Saved! (2004)

This film is kind of off the wall as well as a satire about religion and the bible. It is about church goers who try to force religion down your throat. It makes fun of both sides the believers and non-believers. I think no matter which side you personally believe in you will find it to be funny and ridiculous at the same time. It was pretty entertaining and the cast were great in their roles. It was directed by Brian Dannelly who also co-wrote the film with Michael Urban.

They used the tagline “Heaven Help Us”

It would be considered a comedy with some dramatic moments in it as well. Jena Malone plays Mary as an obvious biblical reference, and the story centers around her for the most part at a Christian high school. Mandy Moore plays Hilary Faye who also attends the school and becomes her rival. Keep your eyes open as Macaulay Culkin is in this with a nice performance as Roland who is Hilary’s brother. He happens to be handicapped and fancies Eva Amurri the only Jewish girl at the school who plays Cassandra, she initially has nothing to do with him. Patrick Fugit plays “Patrick” and becomes the center of affection between the girls. Heather Matarazzo is Tia who is trying to fit in yet is opinionated as well. Chad Faust plays Dean who seemingly is the romantic interest of Mary. Elizabeth Thai plays Veronica and is an acquaintance of the girls.

Martin Donovan is Pastor Skip, who leads the studies at the school centre. Mary-Louise Parker also appears in this as Lillian. Kett Turton is Mitch, Julia Arkos is the PE Coach, Donna White is Trudy Mason, James Caldwell is the Hairdresser, and Nicki Clyne appears as the Guitar Player. The late Patrick Swayze appears in this as well as an over the top religious inspirational speaker.

Things change for Mary as she sees a vision of Jesus in a pool, from there the story gets pretty wild and whacky. I believe most people will find this to be at least mildly amusing and worth a look see.

Contact (1997) Review

Contact (1997)

If you like space, the unknown and mystery then this was a good pick. There are some nice performances by the cast and the directing by Robert Zemeckis was excellent. It was based upon the novel written Carl Sagan. The story was written by Ann Druyan as well as Carl Sagan. James V. Hart and Michael Goldenberg both collaborated on the screenplay.

This is absolutely one of Jodie Foster’s best roles as Eleanor Arroway. Jena Malone portrays a younger version of Eleanor (Young Ellie). David Morse plays her father Ted Arroway, Matthew McConaughey is Palmer Joss, Tom Skerritt is David Drumlin, James Woods, Michael Kitz, Geoffrey Blake is Fisher, William Fichtner is Kent, Sami Chester is Vernon, Timothy McNeil is Davio, Laura Elena Surillo is the Cantina Woman, Henry Strozier is the Minister, Michael Chaban is Hadden Suit, Max Martini is Willie, Larry King appears in this as himself, and Thomas Garner is Ian Broderick.

Now that the leading cast has been highlighted, the impact this will make upon you by the end of the film is quite overwhelming. I think you will understand after having watched this one. Most of the audience I remember were in an emotional state of mind in the theatre.

The main storyline is about an astronomer who receives a signal from deep space. This leads to a form of communication of the alien species and us on earth. Instructions are given but will they be followed correctly?

The tagline used was “Get ready to take a chance on something that just might end up being the most profoundly impactful moment for humanity, for the history… of history”

I recommend this one to everyone as an older pick worthy of a watch. It has a real sense of humanity in it as well as mysterious happenings. What would you do in this situation if it really happened?

Into the Wild (2007) Review

Into the Wild (2007)

This movie was directed by Sean Penn who does a bit of gorilla filmmaking in this picture. The lead character in this story is played by actor Emile Hirsch, from such movies as Speed Racer (2008). His talent shines through as Chris McCandless a young man who turns his back on the ways of modern day society. He becomes a drifter and decides to adventure into the wilderness with nearly nothing after giving away $24,000 to charity. He meets all types of people along the way of his travels. And he sees nature with a clear set of eyes.

There is some added narration done by his sister who is played by talented actress Jena Malone who you might remember from the movies Cheaters (2000) or Saved! (2004). I happen to remember her from the movie Donnie Darko (2001). His parents are played by William Hurt as Walt McCandless and Marcia Gay Harden as Billie McCandless. There are a few other noted actors that appear in this one such as Catherine Keener as Jan Burres and Vince Vaughn as Wayne Westerberg. You will also see up comer Kristen Stewart as Tracy Tatro from Twilight (2008) and Zach Galifanakis from The Hangover (2009) as Kevin.
What sets this story apart, is the way it was told, and how we see the character Chris depart from all that he has known in his life. He enters a deeper world of adventure and danger. He struggles to find himself along the way, and his actions ultimately decide what happens. The music was an interesting choice for the scene transitions and becomes an anthem through the film as he tries to make his way to Alaska. If you have the time, it might be worth the watch, the movie is long.
