Labyrinth (1986)

I’ve seen this one over the years many times, I thought the music was creative performed by David Bowie who also plays the role of Jareth the Goblin King in this as well. This was produced by George Lucas, and the late Jim Henson was responsible for the puppets and animatronics that were used to bring these characters to life. For this reason alone it was worth watching, but this is a nice, solid, yet simple story about a girl played by a much younger Jennifer Connelly named Sarah.

Her parents go away and she is left with babysitting duty. She is jealous of her little baby brother played by Toby Froud named “Toby” and wishes him to go away and from her intentions the child is taken by the Goblin King. This sets up the story, and we see her adventure into this fantasy realm of creatures and characters with stunning backdrops throughout the film. She only has 13 hours to rescue her brother, and figure her way through the Labyrinth. She is a confused and typical teenager filled with lots of different emotions. She befriends different creatures along the way to aid her in her quest. This is another film that is worthwhile to watch with your kids and family. I highly recommend this one.

Blood Diamond (2006) Review

Blood Diamond (2006)

This was a pretty horrific tale of what happens in Africa and the underworld of trading that goes on, people are killed over the diamonds that are found. Until watching this movie, I had no idea that this country was going through things like this. I admire the work of director Edward Zwick and he certainly does well in telling this story and shining light onto the diamond marketplace. He will be producing another film titled: “Love and other Drugs” coming in 2010. I remember watching a television series he executive produced titled “My So-Called Life” which starred a young Claire Danes and Jared Leto. It was show that was ahead of its time I think, and was under appreciated by the mainstream audience.

I think one of his standout films was Glory (1989) starring Matthew Broderick, Denzel Washington, Cary Elwes, and Morgan Freeman. There is an impressive cast in Blood Diamond (2006), with Leonardo DiCaprio as Danny Archer a smuggler/trader type character. The talented Djimon Hounsou is Solomon Vandy a fisherman, and a man whose family is in jeopardy, he is a family man trying to survive in the society he is in. His son is in danger, and has been brainwashed, and throughout the film he later strives to protect him.

Jennifer Connelly also stars in this as Maddy Bowen a freelance styled type reporter. There is a sense of political unrest as things unfold in Sierra Leone. As the story progresses Solomon Vandy is kidnapped and forced to work as a diamond miner. He discovers a rare pink diamond worth a fortune, and as he conceals it the camp leader also sees, only at that moment the camp is then attacked. Soloman is then chased, but he finds a spot to hide the diamond. I won’t give away anymore, I can only recommend watching this film it was good and showcases the talents of the actors in it. The film speed moved pretty well also. So, if you are in the mood for a story based on real events that happen, then you will most likely enjoy this. Blood Diamond (2006) was nominated for 5 academy awards.

The Day the Earth Stood Still (2008) Review

The Day the Earth Stood Still (2008)

This was a remake of the 1951 movie with the same title. I went to see this in the theatre with my wife, and both of us did think it was worth the price of admission. I recall only seeing part of the original film and tried to remember it. Of course now with special effects the way they are, and things getting better all the time, a movie like this has new life in a visual sense. The leading roles are performed by Keanu Reeves as Klaatu an alien being far away from earth who is sent here to destroy us with his guardian robotic friend watching out for him. The character Klaatu is then taken to a military base where he is diagnosed as examined.

The lovely and talented Jennifer Connelly stars as Dr. Helen Benson she then chooses to help Klaatu which in turn changes the outcome of the story. There are other appearances in this like Kathy Bates playing the Secretary of Defense Regina Jackson and as usual she is brilliant. Newcomer Jaden Smith who is the son of Will and Jada Smith plays the role of Jacob Benson the son of Connelly’s character. The comedic actor John Cleese also appears as Professor Barnhardt in this. I recommend this as a rental if you are in the mood for a sci-fi film.
