The Net (1995)

If you like suspense movies, this one will grab your interest. It is a bit dated now by comparison to the technology that exists today. However, it still holds up as a good story and has enough action sequences in it to keep things moving at a nice pace. It was directed by Irwin Winkler who did well with the script and getting the actors to give it a realistic touch. It was written by both John D. Brancato and Michael Ferris. I have seen this film a couple of times, first in the theatre and catching it on television one evening. Both times, I thought Sandra Bullock playing Angela Bennett was fantastic. This to me is one of her better performances alongside Speed (1994) with Keanu Reeves and While You Were Sleeping (1995).

I’ve heard good things about her performance in The Blind Side (2009) now in theaters, but I have not yet seen it. She has a girl next door quality about her in The Net (1995) where she brings a paranoid appeal to the character Angela. You can’t help but get wrapped up in this world she is in. Her character is a specialist with computers and a bit of a loner. Her only real friends are online aside from her ailing mother who suffers from Alzheimer’s. This film is a mirror to society today, and how everything we have is on a computer system somewhere. Our entire lives are recorded and catalogued in some way or another. This leaves room for potential chaos from prying eyes where they don’t need to be.

Jeremy Northam portrays an interesting character in this that is ruthless yet cunning named Jack Devlin. His counterpart is played by Wendy Gazelle as Ruth Marx whose identity is used for a reason. Keep your eyes open for Dennis Miller playing an acquaintance to Angela named Dr. Alan Champion. I thought the casting Dennis in this role was creative and it seemed to work out well.  Diane Baker plays Mrs. Bennett, Ken Howard is Michael Bergstrom, Ray McKinnon is Dale Hessman, Daniel Schorr is the WNN Anchor, L. Scott Caldwell is the Public Defender, Robert Gossett is Ben Phillips, Kristina Krofft is the Nurse, Juan García is Resort Desk Clerk, Tony Perez is the Mexican Doctor, Margo Winkler is Mrs. Raines and Gene Kirkwood is Stan Whiteman.

This film would be classified as a drama with some action in it as well as crime and suspense. I think most people would enjoy seeing this especially if you like action and suspenseful films. When Angela gets a hold of a disk which contains very important information on it her life gets flipped upside down. I think you will find it to be an entertaining ride.

Crash (2004) Review

Friday, July 17th, 2009

Crash (2004)

This was an Oscar winner, so obviously it got lots of attention. I wanted to review it also; this movie was extremely well done in a very subtle way. The interconnected stories are all meshed together in some way or another. This makes the story dynamic in different ways, so you have to see and read between the lines of what is there. The movie was directed by Paul Haggis who has talent growing out of his shoulders, even though the man has lost his hair. You might know that he also won for his writing of the screenplay for Million Dollar Baby (2004) which was directed by Clint Eastwood. This means only since 1950 he is the only screenwriter who has won two back to back best film awards from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. That’s quite an achievement. He directed this film also.

You will see a lot of familiar faces in this one, including Sandra Bullock playing Jean Cabot who is a rich woman without any real friends in life, until she wakes up to realize who is important to her. The unique Don Cheadle plays Det. Graham Waters who is a partial centerpiece for the film. You will also see Tony Danza in this as Fred and Brendan Fraser as Rick Cabot. Keith David is Lt. Dixon, Loretta Devine is playing Shaniqua Johnson, Matt Dillon as Officer John Ryan, Ryan Phillippe as Officer Tom Hansen and Jennifer Esposito is Ria. Also, Terrence Howard is in this playing the role of Cameron Thayer and his wife is played by Thandie Newton. The actor Michael Peña also gives a great performance. There are others of course, but you will have to see this yourself.

The performances given in this were excellent. The movie shines light on racial tensions, and takes place throughout various locations in Los Angeles. The open setting of the story takes place with several people involved in multiple car crashes, the movie flashes back to the daily lives of each of the central characters and from there we get a sense of what really happened and how things unfolded. I highly recommend this, and it will be put on my best picks list. The tagline for this film was: “You think you know who you are. You have no idea”.

Premonition (2007) Review

Sunday, July 12th, 2009

Premonition (2007)

I caught this one on television the other day, before I had only seen part of the movie. After having seen it entirely, I thought it was pretty good. The story goes like this; a woman and her husband have two daughters and their marriage is on the rocks, they are trying to work things out but things are tough. The wife is played by the talented and cutesy Sandra Bullock best known for her role as Annie Porter from Speed (1994) starring alongside Keanu Reeves. In this one she is Linda Hanson, a typical mother and suspects her husband is cheating on her she becomes quite depressed and saddened by the situation.

Her husband Jim Hanson is played by actor Julian McMahon who is best known for his television work as Cole Turner on the “Charmed” series with Holly Marie Combs, Alyssa Milano, Brian Krause and Rose Mc Gowan. He also starred in the series “Nip/Tuck” as Dr. Christian Troy. Linda Hanson, Bullocks character has an extreme ability to see the outcome of things to come, hence the title of the film “Premonition”. She thinks she is going crazy, but by the end of the movie she resolves things or does she? Watch this one, it’s pretty entertaining and a good rental or buy.

The latest Twilight movie “The Twilight Saga: New Moon” has become the highest grossing box office film of all time beating out The Dark Knight (2008) which earned $67.2 million. The funds for the feature were apparently privately raised.

Rocky Returns again!

Schmucks for Dinner!

The cast is now confirmed for Schmucks for Dinner, this feature will be directed by Jay Roach. Ron Livingston, Steve Carell and Paul Rudd will all appear in this film. It is about a group of close friends who make a habit of inviting the biggest schmucks they can find to dinner. It will be a comedy and hopefully pretty humorous.

The veteran actor left us with many memorable roles in his career but unfortunately lost his fight with pancreatic cancer at age 57. He will be missed and remembered by his fans, friends and family.

Johnny Depp is mad!

The actor recently has major concerns over the changes to the Walt Disney Company after them letting go Dick Cook who was formally the chairman. He is not enthusiastic about the upcoming Pirates of the Carribean 4 film. Who knows what the future holds for Disney? They did purchase Marvel Comics not long ago.

Indiana Jones will return!

This has been a long wait, but it seems that Steven Spielberg and George Lucas are in agreement on what the fifth film will be about and the storyline. No eta yet on this yet, but more than likely the end of next year or the summer of 2011. I’m assuming Harrison Ford will return again if not it will be a disaster.

Spiderman 4!

Director Sam Raimi will more than likely return as the director of this series, the villains should be Electro and Vulture. Kirsten Dunst will return as Mary Jane Watson and Tobey Maguire as Peter Parker aka Spider-Man. J.K. Simmons is also on board returning as J. Jonah Jameson.

The A-Team!

There will be a movie based upon the television series coming out sometime next year the cast so far includes Bradley Cooper playing the character Face and Liam Neeson will play Col. John ‘Hannibal’ Smith. I’m not sure about the casting so far, but perhaps it can work. This will be directed by Joe Carnahan. The screenplay will be done by Michael Brandt, Stephen J. Cannel, Derek Haas, and Skip Woods. Jessica Biel will be playing the ex-girlfriend of Face.

Disney buys Marvel Comics!

The Walt Disney company has decided to purchase Marvel Comics for $4 billion dollars, Iger is the go to fix it man for Disney, and helped to decide that this would be a good acquisition for the company and gives them access to a slew of characters and material to work with for future film releases.

Rambo Returns!

One of the characters that made Sylvester Stallone a household name has been green lighted to return again in Rambo V: The Savage Hunt look for it sometime late next year by Nu Image / Millennium Films who are behind this production.

The actor has been chosen to portray Lestat once played by Tom Cruise in Interview with the Vampire (1994). In this version Downey will breath life into the undead creature expect it to be released sometime late next year possibly.

Clash of the Titans!

Another update from the previously released picture done back in 1981 starring Harry Hamlin as Perseus and Judi Bowker as Andromeda will be released next year in 2010. The new film will star Sam Worthington as Perseus Alexa Davalos as Andromeda, Ralph Fiennes will be playing Hades and Liam Neeson will be Zeus. This is a Warner Bros. Pictures release. It will be interesting to see if this cast can compete with the original. It’s tough to replace people like Burgess Meredith who played Ammon in the original film.

Pirates of the Caribbean 4!

Yes, that’s right there will be another installment of the popular movie franchise which will bring back Captain Jack Sparrow again played by Johnny Depp. It is yet unclear if Geoffrey Rush, Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley will all return. Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End (2007) left the audiences wondering if another film was on it’s way. Rob Marshall will direct this one and the screenplay will be done by Terry Rossio and Ted Elliott.

X-men: First Class!

It is nice to learn that there will be another X-Men film coming and 20th Century Fox will be involved. Josh Schwartz will write the script for this. And the casting is not yet known. But look for it sometime next year possibly. Marvel Studios has been successful with the series in the comic book world and this will setup the initial story of the original characters joining the X-Men team which include: Angel, Colossus, Iceman, Rogue, Shadowcat and Jubilee they have made cameos in the other films that were previously released.

Thundercats!

Remember those furry cartoon characters from the 1980’s? Well, they are going to be making a live-action version it seems. They are human-like cat people who have different abilities. The only known information at this time is Jerry O’Flaherty will be directing and Paul Sopocy will write the screenplay. Warner Bros. Pictures will be behind the film and distribution is not yet known.

Underworld 4!

It seems David Dobkin who was responsible for the movie Wedding Crashers (2005) will produce and direct this. The main story is two men swap bodies. One man is very responsible and upstanding who also has a child and the other man is quite lazy and crude.

Spielberg’s Halo!

The famed producer and director is in talks to get on board with the video game Halo, which is an online shooter game where thousands of people fight online. This will be the first of a possible series of films in the works. The negotiations are still going on, if it goes through then the working film title will be based off the Halo: Fall of Reach script. The studio Dreamworks will be involved which Spielberg is a part of. The Walt Disney Company will more than likely be distributing if its a go.

Sam I am Mr. Cruise!

The actor Sam Worthington is going to replace Tom Cruise in the remake movie of The Tourist, they will begin filming in January. Charlize Theron will also star with him. Yes, the daughter of director Ron Howard will be taking over the role of Victoria in Eclipse movie the next installment of the Twilight series of films. This is big news to the fans and some are wondering if she can do it. It will be interesting to see the final product at release. She is talented, and should fill the role fine. The studio involved in this is Summit and the actress that previously played the role is Rachelle Lefevre who apparently had a shooting schedule problem which led to a conflict for the studio and her to complete the part.

The Parsifal Mosaic!

Ron Howard will be taking the reigns for the film The Parsifal Mosaic which is an adaptation of The Bourne Identity which was written by Robert Ludlum. The concept is a CIA operative agent who believes they have seen their lover killed. Their lover apparently was a double agent working for the KGB. The studios involved in this are Imagine Entertainment, and Brian Grazer will be producing it along with Captivate Entertainment associates Ben Smith and Jeffrey Weiner.

Jennier Aniston the Puma!

Yes, she might be getting older but she is still in demand. The actress will be starring in a upcoming production titled “Pumas”. The story basically is several 30 year old women are trying to date much younger men the story will be set in France and they will be at a ski resort. It will be a romantic comedy picture.

The Runaways!

Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning are currently shooting the upcoming biography picture titled “The Runaways” about the band that was a sensation back in the 1970’s. Kristen Stewart plays Joan Jett and Dakota Fanning is Cherie Currie. They seem to be having fun together filming this one, and it will probably be a pretty good film the release date is set for next year.

Denzel Washington is Unstoppable!

The talented actor returns again in the upcoming Tony Scott film “Unstoppable”. Denzel will play an engineer that boards a train loaded with explosives alongside actor Chris Pine. Originally there was a conflict of interest and Denzel has been attached since April, there was a resolution and now the pre-production will resume.

The Hobbit!

As you might know, they are working on this film designing the backdrop for many of the shots to be used in the film. Oh and by the way, for once they are actually using real landscaping versus CGI computer shots and trickery. The actually filming won’t begin until next year sometime in 2010. The scheduled release will be December 2011. So, all you hobbit fans sit tight and wait a while for Hobbiton to be seen again.

It looks like little Drew Barrymoore will now make her directorial debut with this film backed by her company Flower Films, in association with Fox Searchlight Pictures distributing and Mandate Pictures along with Vincent Pictures and Rye Road on board. Drew Barrymoore will also play the role of Smashley Simpson in this film. The talented actress Ellen Page from movies like Juno (1998) will be starring as Bliss Cavendar a young woman trying to fit in a small Texas town named Bodeen, she discovers a roller derby league and later joins as “Babe Ruthless”. There are more familiar faces in this such as Juliette Lewis, Marcia Gay Harden, and Jimmy Fallon.

The juggernaut company Disney has just bought the rights for the novel “Wings” from author Aprilynne Pike. Her character Laurel will be torn between worlds of faeries and trolls, she will have to choose between human and fairy love and decide which path is right for her.

The Green Hornet that was originally created by George W. Trendlebased is coming to the big screen after they gather the right cast and crew for the project. This will be done by Columbia Pictures and originally Stephen Chow was suppost to star as the character Kato but backed out of the project due to a scheduling conflict.

Robin Hood!

Yes, that’s right it’s time for another Robin Hood movie. We haven’t seen this character quite enough. We need to see it again ahem. Well, maybe with the cast it will be OK and done differently. The director Ridley Scott and actor Russell Crowe will team up again from their past effort with Gladiator. You will also see Cate Blanchett, William Hurt, Kevin Durand, Vanessa Redgrave, Scott Grimes, and Mark Strong in this also.

The Three Stooges!

This is quite interesting, I’m not sure about the cast, but sometimes actors can surprise you. They are making Larry, Curly, and Moe come to life with Sean Penn as Larry, Jim Carrey as Curly and Benicio Del Toro as Moe. I’m shocked at the casting, but who knows it might just work. The movie will be directed by Bobby and Peter Farrelly they will have to work their creative magic for this one!

The Expendables!

What can you say when you have a cast with Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Mickey Rourke, Jason Statham, Brittany Murphy, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren? Well, I guess it might work, we will see I guess. This will be directed by Sylvester Stallone. The premise is a bunch of mercenaries head to South America to overthrow a ruthless dictator. It will probably do pretty well at the box office just with all the loaded talent in it.

Dr. Death!

The latest news is actor Al Pacino will be playing the infamous Jack Kevorkian for the HBO movie “You Don’t Know Jack”. His assistance’s are played by actor John Goodman and actress Susan Sarandon. It should make for an interesting look about this real life biographical representation of Jack Kevorkian the man who assisted many in meeting their demise. But this film focuses on his early years. It was directed by Barry Levinson.

Ryan Reynolds is now the Green Lantern!

It happened, good or bad this was the choice the studio Warner Brothers made to cast for this role. I personally think he might do OK, I’ve underestimated him before, I won’t make the same mistake twice in his acting abilities. He has come a long ways from the Two Guys A Girl and a Pizza Place days. You might remember him from X-MEN: ORIGINS WOLVERINE as the character Deadpool or Hannibal King from the Wesley Snipes vampire picture Blade Trinity. Move over Marvel here is your new comic action star.

Actor Danny Huston is now the King of England!

Yes, its true he will join the cast on the film Robin Hood done by Ridley Scott. Danny Huston has appeared in the role of William Stryker in the latest X-MEN movie, and he has recently finished work on Clash of the Titans and will play Poseidon.

A Perfect Getaway!

This movie will hit theaters August 14th and is a suspense type of a film. It should be pretty good with Milla Jovovich starring alongside Steve Zahn. They will have to keep there eyes open when they arrive on the island!

Brothers!

The anticipated film by Jim Sheridan will star some heavily talented actors such as Jake Gyllenhaal, Natalie Portman, and Tobey Maguire with Mare Winningham and Sam Shepard. This should be a well produced and acted film and could creep up on the Oscar meter.

Ghostbusters 3 movie!

Yes, thats right, according to various sources, there might well be another Ghostbusters in the future. The actor, director and writer Harold Ramis is trying to get the project off the ground. This would be the 3rd installment of the popular series of films. And I think most people would welcome another, if they can get the rest of the original cast back to do it.

Lindsey Lohan Loses out!

Unfortunately for her and her career she is making the wrong decisions, she lost out on a role in the currently released Warner Brothers picture “The Hangover”. She should have taken this role, and it would have certainly helped her get back on track. The role was for a stripper named Jade, the part went to Heather Graham instead.

Smurf Live-Action Movie!

In movie news, the director Raja Gosnell is going to direct the new anticipated Smurf live-action film. What will this movie look like? One can only wonder…

Both movies studios Sony and Columbia pictures are attached to the project. I remember these creatures back in the old days, and how popular they were. Those little blue guys had only one female Smurf around. That was strange, I wonder how this will work in the live action version? lol

Terminator 5!

Yes, that’s right another Terminator movie is in the works from the Halcyon Company, and it will more than likely be directed by McG the man who directed Terminator Salvation now playing in theaters. It is also unclear which studios will be involved in the distribution rights and how many will be attached to the project.

Spiderman 4!

It looks like Tobey Maguire will return as Spiderman along with director and fan Sam Raimi, the production for this is scheduled to start sometime early next year. Apparently Gary Ross who worked with Tobey as a director in the film Pleasantville and Seabiscuit has decided to work on the scripting.

Cowboy Bebop!

The actor Keanu Reeves will star in a upcoming movie called Cowboy Bebop he will star as a bounty hunter named Spike Spiegel. It is a Japanese animated series about a group of bounty hunters and their adventures flying in a starship called Bebop. There is no other information known who else will be in this film just yet.

Morning Glory!

The highest paid leading male actor and superstar Harrison Ford will be starring alongside the likes of Rachel McAdams in a upcoming comedy produced by J.J. Abrams that studio Paramount Pictures is behind. There are other notable actors in this one like Diane Keaton and Jeff Goldblum. The base storyline is an aspiring news producer tries to save a failing morning television show.

Going the Distance!

Drew Barrymore and former Boyfriend Justin Long are reunited again in this romantic comedy movie done by New Line Studios. The female lead character moves to Chicago to become a middle school teacher. Maybe this movie will be good for the studio and their careers.

Book of Eli!

The little woman and longtime fiancee of Macaulay Culkin (he has been together with Mila Kunis since 2002) is making a buzz in Hollywood nowadays. The actress is probably best known for her role in the television series That 70s’ Show and is slated to star in a upcoming movie called Book of Eli, which is about a sacred book that holds the key to saving humanity.

Reese Witherspoon Comedy!

The movie will be part Broadcast News, part Terms of Endearment and will have three lead characters attached to it. James L. Brooks will be directing this, and has previously done five films thus far. Reese Witherspoon and Cameron Crowe were orignally going to start a project for Sony Studios, but that film has been pushed to July leaving her room in her schedule.

Will and Jada Smiths son Jaden!

The young actor Jaden Smith will apparently star in a remake of The Karate Kid for Sony Pictures. I wonder how good this movie will be? Sometimes its best to leave things alone, especially classics. Time Machine anyone? They are going to take plot elements from the original film, changing some of the action and shoot on more exotic locations like Beijing.

Tron Sequel!

Yes, they are going to make a Sequel for Tron. I can’t believe it, I hope it will be done correctly. The actress Olivia Wilde from the television series House will be in this and Disney is attached in some way to this project. I know many people enjoyed the original, and it sparked a video game that was popular in the 1980’s. The new movie is will be the next chapter and the plot details are being guarded.

T.J. Hooker!

They are going to bring life to the television series T.J. Hooker who’s leading actor is television legend William Shatner who starred alongside Heather Locklear. This movie will likely be a comedy with some action. The names attached to this are David Foster, Ryan Heppe and Rick Husky as producers. The director of The Scorpion King will direct a script written by Brent Maddock and S.S. Wilson. The original series started in 1982. The film version will focus on the relationship the main character had with his father.

Mel Gibson returns!

It’s been a while since Mel Gibson the actor has stepped in front of the camera, now its his time again as he returns playing a depressed man who uses a hand puppet to express himself in a odd way. The film currently titled as “The Beaver” will be directed by Jodie Foster who will also star as his wife in this production. The last time they were together on screen was in the movie Maverick back in 1994. They should begin production in September in New York.

Megan Fox in Jennifer’s Body!

Megan Fox has a new movie coming soon called Jennifer’s Body (2009). She has captured the attention of Hollywood from the release of Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen now in theaters starring once again as Mikaela Banes. She already has more films in the works. And many people consider her to be one of the most beautiful women in Hollywood. There is no doubt that she will have a good career.

The Green Lantern superhero!

They are still looking for someone to play the comic book character The Green Lantern. The D.C. comics character will be dynamic and a real challenge to cast for. I would prefer an unknown actor to play the role. But Hollywood has looked at actors Bradley Cooper, Ryan Reynolds and even Justin Timberlake who I think wouldn’t work at all in the role of The Green Lantern. The Warner Brothers studio is awaiting an answer from Martin Campbell so that they can make the official announcement. The Green Lantern character first appeared in All-American comics back in July 1940 issue number 16. The character Hal Jordan (The Green Lantern) is a test pilot who is chosen by an alien who is dying to be his successor in an intergalactic police force known as the Green Lanterns. The reason he is chosen is because of the amount of willpower he had over everyone else on earth.

Zooey Deschanel in Your Highness!

According to The Hollywood Reporter, it seems that Zooey will be joining the the comedy film as Belladonna the virgin in Your Highness, which is back by Universal Studios. The movie was written by Ben Best and Danny McBride. The story is about a completely lazy prince played by Danny McBride that goes on a quest to help save his father’s kingdom. His brother will be played by James Franco.
