For all you Buffy the Vampire Slayer television fans, you will enjoy seeing Emma Caulfield playing the role of Oona in this. She is a troubled woman approaching thirty and her hormones are running ramped. I think many people will enjoy this one; its concept was unique and not yet seen before. Technology has caught up with the dating scene and people now get implanted with electronic devices installed onto their wrist palm, which in turn counts down to the exact day and time they will meet their significant other in life.
The film seemed to capture your attention right from the start and I liked how they worked in the opening credits using narrative voice over’s, nothing new here…but the style which was used was fitting I thought for this film and the graphics which were used.
It was written and directed by Jac Schaeffer, she is an upcoming talent and this seems to be her second mainstream production to date. I think she has a future in filmmaking, if she decides this is what she wants to do. I think Hollywood should take notice of her.
The film had it all, bits of humor, and dramatic moments without being too melodramatic and it seems to make you think about your relationships and examine your life and be thankful for what you may have. There are lots of scenes where you think Oona will completely lose it, but she catches herself and tries to pull herself together somehow. Michelle Borth plays Oona’s step sister named Steph she is as complicated as her sister, but seems to find comfort with one night stands and the men she meets. How she has energy for all of this is amusing to see with her dry brand of humor, she works two jobs and still somehow makes the time.
Veteran actress JoBeth Williams plays their mother Marion and I thought she did quite well she was easily passable as their mother. Desmond Harrington enters the film as Dan the Man and gets tied up into this tangled story as a romantic interest.
Kali Rocha plays Matchmaker Patty from the TiMER Company; she has previously worked with Emma Caulfield (aka Anya) on the television series Buffy the Vampire Slayer playing the character Halfrek. Mark Harelik appears in this as Dr. Serious; Tom Irwin (My So-Called Life) plays Paul, John Ingle plays Dutch, Sean C. Francis is the CEO, Bianca Brockl plays Soledad, Christine Joaquin plays Cindy, Eric Jungmann plays Manager Larry, Celene Lee plays Tammi, Hayden McFarland plays Jesse, Nicki Norris plays Delphine, and Muse Watson plays Rick.
I think you could enjoy this with your wife as I did or with seeing it with family and friends, the film had some lessons of life thrown into it while keeping this light hearted and laid back. However, it does have some tendencies as being a cliché type film with a few loophole moments in the story. Regardless of this, I still think you should check it out sometime.
Some movies you remember for their creativity, and this one was this type of a movie. Imagine a world without power? We are all so dependent on having it, that when we lose it, all hell can break loose. The tagline for this one was: “When Nothing Works, Anything Goes” I thought this one was good enough to rent or find for cheap to buy. It makes you think about how things can change dramatically for your family and friends, in an over the top situation directed by David Koepp. This was written by James Burke and David Koepp also co-wrote the screenplay.
The cast includes an underrated array of characters played by Kyle MacLachlan as Matthew, Elisabeth Shue as Annie Kay and Dermot Mulroney as Joe. They are all close friends and decide to stick together to overcome the extreme environment which they now have to deal with. They have no choice in the matter and their lives are in constant threat. Each day for them is another victory in this strangely entertaining tale.
I think some critics didn’t like this film, and thought there was something missing. Perhaps it was the choice of actors and the director’s vision. Who knows? I still think it was worthy of a watch regardless of what others thought. More often than not the so-called critics compare any older release to something fresh out in the theatres. The choices for watchable movies seem to dwindle each year. I’ve been disappointed recently in some of the upcoming releases.
There are more first name only appearances in this feature which include: Rick Worthy as Johnny, Richard T. Jones as Raymond, Bill Smitrovich, Steph, Michael Rooker as Gary, Tori Kristiansen as Sarah, and Tyra Kristiansen as Sarah. (Yes the younger girl Sarah was played by a set of twins on set) This was the girl’s only appearance known on screen.
Overall, I think you will find this one to be entertaining enough to check out. The actors seemed to make the most out of what they had to work with. It would be considered a B list or even C list movie to some. But, I thought it was worthwhile for sure. Check this one out if you want to see something with a different kind of premise.
